Description
Auction     VIP tour of Sunset Magazine’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California Enjoy lunch and a VIP tour for up to six people with a Sunset editor at the beautiful Sunset Magazine headquarters located in Menlo Park, California. Tour the Thomas Church designed gardens and the historic Cliff May designed headquarters. Sunset Magazine was first published in May 1898 to promote the Southern Pacific Railroad and early contributors included Mark Twain, Jack London, Mary Austin and Bret Harte. The history of the magazine is the history of the West. Its pages reflect the development and sophistication of America’s frontier; the tastes, the trends; and the lifestyle innovations. Generations of Western newcomers have turned to the magazine to learn how to garden in an unfamiliar climate, cook with new ingredients, and find a vacation destination in a new land. Today people still turn to the magazine for the same reasons: to learn how to make the most of life in the West. The Sunset headquarters was designed by Cliff May, the father of the California ranch home and designer of the Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa. The garden, commissioned by Thomas Church, mirrors the outline of the entire west coast, with plantings for each region starting in the Northwest and ending with Baja California. The flower beds are replanted at least three times a year and there are more than 300 kinds of shrubs, trees, vines, ground covers, annuals, and perennials in the garden at any given time.
